This is a big step for a young person navigating life. There are expectations coming from family, friends, culture, community and themselves and it all happens just when they start puberty, their hormones are raging, their biological imperative for independence is calling and their brain is re-wiring. It is a time where the function of ticking boxes can and often does take precedence over relationships and this can easily lay foundations for patterns of behaviour later in life.
